The Showcase Trap

Families spend thousands on exposure events before anyone explains what exposure actually is. Here is how to tell a useful event from an expensive photo op.

Exposure is not an event, it is a relationship

A showcase can put an athlete in front of coaches. It cannot make a coach recruit them. The families who get the most out of an event arrive with a target list, a coach to follow up with by name, and a profile that already answers the basic questions a coach is asking.

Without those three things, an athlete is one of hundreds of similar-looking jerseys on the same field, no matter how well they play that day.

Three questions before you pay

First, who attended last year, and did any of those programs recruit a player from the event? Ask for specifics, not a logo wall.

Second, how are metrics measured and verified? A verified 60 or exit velocity is worth more to a coach than a number someone typed into a spreadsheet.

Third, does the event line up with an active evaluation period in your sport, at a level your athlete can realistically play? If the answer is no, the math does not work.

What to do instead

  • Build the profile first: verified metrics, current film, academics, and contact info behind one link
  • Send personal intro emails to the coaches who recruit your position at the programs on your list
  • Choose target camps run by the staff of a school your athlete would actually attend
  • Follow up on a schedule: after the event, with updated numbers, and again when film improves

The honest version

Most athletes do not need more events. They need a realistic target list, better film, and consistent communication. Those three things cost time, not money, and they are what actually moves a recruiting conversation forward.

Spend on exposure when it is aimed. Aim it with research, a profile, and a follow-up plan.
