Why the calendar matters more than effort
The NCAA calendar decides when coaches can watch, call, text, and visit. Two athletes can send the same email on the same day, in the same sport, and get completely different results depending on where that day falls.
You do not need to memorize it. You need to know which period you are in and what it allows for your sport and division.
The four periods in plain terms
- Contact period: coaches may have in-person contact with you and your family, on and off campus
- Evaluation period: coaches may watch you compete, but in-person contact is limited
- Quiet period: no in-person contact, but calls, emails, and texts are still allowed
- Dead period: almost no in-person contact of any kind, including official visits
Build your year around it
Put your important film and profile updates out before an evaluation period, not during it. Line up campus visits inside contact periods so the conversation can go somewhere. Use quiet and dead periods for the work that does not need a coach present: training, grades, film, and outreach.
Keep the calendar in your tracker next to each program so you are never guessing whether it is a good week to call.
The habit that pays off
Once a month, look at the next 60 days and decide which two or three recruiting actions matter most. It is a small habit that keeps a long process from turning into a rushed spring.
